Dr. Shannon Fraser Appointed as Associate Chair for Faculty Life:
A New Era of Excellence and Support
The McGill Department of Surgery is committed to fostering a culture where our surgeons are supported as individuals, enabling them to thrive professionally and reach their full potential. In alignment with this vision, we initiated a search amongst our ranks for an Associate Chair for Faculty Life.
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Shannon Fraser as the new Associate Chair for Faculty Life in the McGill Department of Surgery. Dr. Fraser's extensive experience and unwavering dedication to her field make her an outstanding choice for this role. Her primary objective will be to cultivate a community that values diversity, promotes professional growth, and champions personal and academic fulfillment at every stage of the surgical faculty life cycle. Dr. Fraser envisions an inclusive, supportive environment where every faculty member feels a profound sense of belonging, purpose, and potential.
Dr. Shannon Fraser graduated from the University of Toronto's medical school in 1999. She completed her residency in general surgery, followed by a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at McGill. She holds two master's degrees, one in zoology and another in experimental surgery (learning and simulation in MIS). Dr. Fraser is an Associate Professor at McGill and has been with the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) since 2005, serving as Division Chief for general surgery since 2009. In 2013, she embraced the challenge of becoming Department Chief at the Lakeshore General Hospital while continuing her administrative and clinical practice at the JGH until May 2018. Her clinical expertise includes minimally invasive, hernia, and ACS surgery, and her research interests focus on surgical education, surgical outcomes, and patient safety innovations, on which she has published numerous journal articles and book chapters. She is passionate about delivering the right care at the right time for the right patient and has been an institutional NSQIP champion and Chair of Pertinence of Practice. Most recently, she has taken on the role of Medical Director for the CIUSSS CODI C4 Command Center. Dr. Fraser is also the immediate past president of the Canadian Society of Physician Leaders.
