Welcome to the Department of Surgery, Ï㽶ÊÓƵ
We pride ourselves in providing excellent clinical care in an environment that optimizes educational opportunities and constantly seeks to advance the quality of surgical care through research and innovation. We seek to recruit and develop surgical faculty who share this vision of clinical excellence and scholarship, and this is supported by a generous endowment from the Tomlinson foundation. Recognizing the realities of practicing surgery in an environment where resources never meet demands, we are committed to improving processes of care to maximize efficiencies and to evaluating the outcomes of our practices.
The university department of surgery comprises seven clinical divisions: General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Urology.
The Department offers postgraduate training programs in all its divisions, accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. Surgical Education is a focus of the department, and is supported in part by The Adair Family endowed Chair. Research in basic and clinical sciences is another high priority of the Department, carried out through a collaboration of clinician-scientists and basic scientists. The research mission is enabled by a partnership between the faculty of medicine and hospital research institutes’ extensive infrastructure. We are proud to offer a surgeon-scientist program, funded by a generous endowment by the Fast Foundation, in which our trainees enroll in a formal degree program (Masters or PhD) in a basic science, clinical epidemiology, education, public health, business administration or experimental surgery. Within our Experimental Surgery graduate programs we have established Concentrations in Global Surgery, Surgical Education/Simulation, and in Surgical Innovation.
The McGill Department of Surgery provides comprehensive and high quality surgical care for adults throughout its network of hospitals. is a network of hospitals that includes the Royal Victoria, Montreal General, Lachine, Montreal Neurological, Montreal Children’s and Montreal Chest Hospital Institute. This network has recently completed a major redevelopment process characterized by construction of a new hospital at the Glen yards and extensive changes to the MGH site. These physical developments have allowed us to redefine the clinical activities that will be carried out at each location. The Lachine campus provides us an opportunity for expansion of the MUHC as we define specific programs that can function effectively and efficiently in that environment. Currently it serves as the hub for our expanded bariatric surgery program.
has also recently completed an expansion into Pavilion K which houses ORs, ER and ICU. It is also conducting a strategic planning process. The priorities of the MUHC and JGH, the two principal tertiary care hospitals in the McGill orbit will then be harmonized to produce a comprehensive, responsible, and integrated plan for clinical care at McGill. is a community teaching hospital that plays an important role in the network of clinical services provided by McGill with its tradition of providing high quality and personal care to the Montreal community that it serves and a popular place for teaching of students and residents. is an integral part of the McGill Department of Surgery providing facilities for world-class orthopedics research. We will highlight the activities and accomplishments of the department and its divisions through this website.
