Caregiving is helping another person care for themselves. The definition may be straightforward, but the role is complex. Caregivers of loved ones living with mental health problems or illness are crucial partners and advocates in their recovery process and one can find themselves overwhelmed with these responsibilities. Caring for another is not easy, and with this role comes challenging and significant life changes, which may have occurred suddenly or have occurred over time.

This role also comes with opportunities to learn about one’s own mental health and wellness, relationship dynamics, complexes social and political systems, time management, and most significantly, how to cope with stress, uncertainty, grief, etc.

The workshop will be a guided conversation on the different realities of caregiving for someone with mental health problems and illness specifically. It will also be a presentation of a few ideas and approaches to providing compassionate care.

A few themes, but others will naturally emerge from conversation, are:

  • Cultivating resiliency
  • Strengthening connection and communication in a relationship of care
  • Mental health considerations and coping mechanisms
  • Empathy and boundaries
