STREAMS

Students may select to focus their elective courses on a stream. Streams do not appear on the official transcript, but students will receive a certificate attesting to completion of the stream requirement and may indicate it on their curriculum vitae.

Students are not required to select a stream. They may choose to select their complementary courses based on their own goals and interests.

Stream 1: Epidemiology

The Epidemiology Stream will allow students to further develop their analytical and methodological skills. Students will be expected to attend the Department’s Epidemiology Seminars and encouraged to participate in one of the epidemiology-related journal clubs.

Stream 2: Global Health

Students in the Global Health Stream will examine critical global health challenges and priorities. Students will be expected to participate in events organized by the Global Health Programs and will complete the GH pre-departure on-line training before the start of their practicum.

Streams 3: Population Dynamics

The Population Dynamics Stream examines knowledge on the transformative demographic and health changes occurring across the globe. Ideal PD practicums would include projects for which quantitative analysis of health processes related to or contributing to population dynamics is a key component. Students in the PD Stream are expected to attend at least five of the talks per term given in the Social Statistics and Population Dynamics Seminar Series. Students enrolled in the PD Stream will have the opportunity to engage with the Consortium on Analytics for Data-Driven Decision Making (CAnD3)

Stream 4: Health Policy and Ethics

The Health Policy and Ethics Stream provides students with the opportunity to develop an understanding of the major policy tools and stakeholders involved in public health policy making, as well providing an awareness of the ethical issues arising in a population and public health context. Students will also be expected to attend a minimum of 2 seminars per term hosted by the Institute for Health & Social Policy or Department of Ethics and Policy.

Stream 5: Infectious Disease

The Infectious Disease Stream aims to train public health professionals with the knowledge and skills to work in infectious disease practice and research. The stream will provide mentorship from faculty with ID epidemiology and/or public health experience which will help optimize the interface with clinical and public health ID. Students will also be expected to participate in the monthly Infectious Disease Epi journal club and attend 3 seminars per semester, offered by IDIGH and CORE.

Courses may not satisfy both a Complementary Course Category and a selective Stream requirement.
