KPE End of Semester Update
The KPE graduate committee (KPEG) is excited to announce that they are currently organizing a food drive, where all items will be donated to a women’s shelter in Montréal at the end of the Fall 2022 semester. Students, staff, and faculty of the department of KPE are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to hallway 101-A in the Currie Gymnasium building. We would like to remind everyone that any donation helps, and we are thankful to those who have donated thus far.

November 16th: World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Day
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a heterogenous lung condition characterized by chronic respiratory symptoms (breathlessness, cough, sputum production, exacerbations) due to abnormalities of the airways (bronchitis, bronchiolitis) and/or alveoli (emphysema) that cause persistent, often progressive, airflow obstruction. COPD is one of the top three causes of death worldwide, causing more than 3 million deaths in 2012, accounting for 6% of all deaths globally.
Research Spotlight: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) research in the Cardiovascular Health and Autonomic Research Laboratory
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal disorder in women, affecting 10% of pre-menopausal women. Women with PCOS may present with a number of reproductive, metabolic, cardiovascular and psychological complications and co-morbidities. Despite this, PCOS remains one of the most poorly understood medical disorders among patients, physicians, and scientists.

Congratulations to Sarkis Hannaian, Milly Huang, and Freddie Seo of Dr. Tyler Churchward-Venne’s Exerise Metabolsim and Nutrition Research Laboratory, who attended the 2022 Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) conference from November 2nd-5th in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
Second Annual McGill Minds in Motion Conference Announced
The Department of Kinesiology & Physical Education have announced that they will be hosting the second annual Minds in Motion (MIM) Conference on March 10th, 2023. The student-organized conference, which will take place on McGill campus, will be open to undergraduate and graduate students throughout Canada who are conducting research in the fields of kinesiology and physical education. The format will include oral, lightning round and poster presentations.

The beginning of the fall semester is a busy time for graduate students, both at the Masters and Doctoral levels. Scholarship and award application deadlines, from provincial and federal governing bodies, are placed throughout the semester, beginning as early as the end of September until the start of December. While these application packages can seem intimating, especially for first time applicants, there are some helpful tips that can guide applicants.
KPE’s Olivia Pastore discusses the importance of recognizing World Spine Day
Taking place on October 16 each year, World Spine Day highlights the importance of spinal health and well-being, as well as recognizing the burden of spinal pain and disability around the world. KPE’s Olivia Pastore, 3rd year PhD Candidate in the Theories and Interventions in Exercise and Health Psychology (TIE) laboratory, says that this day is important to recognize as an estimated one billion people worldwide suffer from spinal pain.

Following a tumultuous past few years amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2022-2023 school year promises to be an exciting time with students back on campus for in-person learning. Sarkis Hannaian, 3rd year PhD Candidate and this year’s KPE graduate (KPEG) committee president, is certainly looking forward to the resumption of research at full capacity without COVID-19 related restrictions.

While the pandemic has, and continues to, take a toll on our mental health, it is of even greater importance to recognize this day and to seek any opportunity to re-kindle our efforts to protect and improve mental health.
