Admission review process
McGill calculation of the 'Top 6'
Select the location of your school:
School located IN Canada
Admission is based on McGill’s calculation of your 'Top 6' pre-university (4U, DU, 4M) course average. A minimum of six 4U, DU and/or 4M courses are required for admission.
- At least four of the six required courses, as well as all prerequisite courses, must be taken at the 4U OR DU level. Only two courses at the 4M level are permitted.Ìý
- Depending on the program, certain prerequisite courses are included. The McGill calculated average excludes most applied courses.
- The only technology coursesÌýeligible for inclusion in the 'Top 6'Ìýaverage are TGJ4M and TDJ4M.
- The only health and physical education course eligible for inclusion in the ‘Top 6’ average is PSK4U.
- However, all types of performing arts courses at the 4M level (allowingÌýa maximum of two) will be eligible for inclusion in the 'Top 6'Ìýaverage.
- For programs where sciences and/or math are prerequisites, these must have been completed within the last five years.
- All programs require a core language (English or French) at the 4U level. If both 4U core English and 4U core French have been taken, the one with the highest grade will be used in the ‘Top 6’ average.
- English and French Second Language courses are not accepted as prerequisites.
- You must have obtained an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) prior to the start of classes.
Applicants are considered for admission in two rounds. Consult decision dates for more information.
If you are completing the IB Diploma or individual IB Diploma CoursesÌýyou will normally be considered for admission based on your high school record and a ‘Top 6’ average. You may subsequently be grantedÌýadvanced standing credits based on your final IB results.
If you are completing Advanced Placement (AP) examinations (through the College Board) you will be considered for admission based on your high school record and a ‘Top 6’ average. You may be granted advanced standing credits based on your final AP exam results.

Supporting documentation
It is in the applicant’s interest to complete their file as quickly as possible. When program space is limited, preference may be given to applicants who have submitted all required supporting documents/information earlier on. Should a program reach its capacity prior to the ‘supporting documents’ and/or ‘self-reporting’ deadline, incomplete applications may be cancelled.
-
Academic documents
All applicantsÌýare required to self-report their grades using the designated form accessible through yourÌý. You will also be required to upload an unofficial copy of your transcript.
You will NOT be asked to submit your OUAC number unless you have been offered admission.
Ìý -
Proof of English proficiency
Applicants who have lived and attended school, for at least four years, in a country where English is the acknowledged primary language, are not required to provide further proof of English proficiency.
If this is not the case, official test results will be required by the supporting document deadline.Ìý Please consultÌýProof of English ProficiencyÌýfor accepted tests and other exemptions.
-
Additional supporting documents
Certain programs will require additional supporting documents. These could be proof of French proficiency, CASPer test results, recommendation letters, personal statement, or other documents; the requirements will be different depending on the program you are applying to. If your program choice is listed below, please carefully verify the additional requirement(s):
- You have applied toÌýEducation, Music, Nursing, and/or Religious Studies
- You have applied for aÌýMajor Entrance Scholarship and/or Financial Aid
- You selectedÌý‘Extenuating Circumstances’Ìýon the application for admission
If none of the above apply, additional supporting documents are not considered in the admission review and should not be submitted.
