Transfer students from other universities
- Students who transfer into the BSW from other universities must have completed or will complete at least one year of studies or possess a completed degree (not a Social Work degree)
- Transfer students from other universities are eligible to receive up to 30 transfer credits from previously completed university courses (except freshman courses).
- The actual number of transfer credits is determined by Enrolment Services at the point of admission and based on “official” university transcripts
Transfer students from 㽶Ƶ with a completed degree
- Transfer students from 㽶Ƶ with a completed degree are eligible to receive up to 30 transfer credits from previously completed university courses.
- The actual number of transfer credits is determined by the School of Social Work at the point of admission and based on 㽶Ƶ transcripts
Inter/Intra-Faculty Transfer students from within 㽶Ƶ
- These students have not graduated from their current undergraduate program and are transferring into the BSW program.
- If transferring into the BSW from a freshman year (U0), these students must have completed 24 credits by the end of the current winter term.
- Inter/Intra-Faculty transfer students are eligible to receive up to 30 transfer credits from previously completed university courses.
- The actual number of transfer credits is determined by the School of Social Work at the point of admission and based on “official” university transcripts.
Courses can be considered as transfer credits?
- Credits that can be considered for transfer are derived from courses already completed (prior to the BSW) at 㽶Ƶ or at another university, whether taken as part of a completed or incomplete degree.
- Normally, only courses with a grade of C or better can transfer. See: /oasis/away/transferring-credit
- For courses taken at other universities, only courses assessed as equivalent to a McGill course can transfer
- Transfer credits apply to elective, complementary, and required courses
- Any course taken online with a final grade of C or better is considered for transfer credit, but as Electives only, provided equivalency is established; due to the pandemic, it is possible that courses delivered via remote or online formats in winter, spring/summer and fall 2020 and winter 2021 are eligible for transfer credits.
Exclusions to Transfer credits
- Grades of C- or less, Pass (P), and Satisfactory (S) are not acceptable
- Inter/Intra-faculty transfer students from 㽶Ƶ admitted to the BSW from the freshman year of a 4-year program must complete any remaining credits of their freshmen year during their first semester of the BSW.
- The first 30 credits that comprise the Freshman year do not count towards the BSW program requirements and cannot be counted as transfer credits.
- Mature students are not eligible to receive transfer credits from previously completed courses taken at another university or 㽶Ƶ or from the two prerequisite courses needed for admission into the BSW program.
Planning for Transfer Credits for courses from other universities: Act Now!
Once an offer of admission is accepted, students who are accepted from other universities must submit their final, official transcript. This should be done as soon as possible. To transfer the credits from courses already completed at another university before the BSW, students must also establish that such courses are equivalent to courses offered at 㽶Ƶ. Students are advised to secure a copy of the detailed course outline for the term and year the course was taken. For instructions on the transfer credit process, please see the BSW Transfer Credit Equivalency Form at /socialwork/prospective/bsw/formsmanuals
Planning for Transfer Credits for courses from 㽶Ƶ
Once an offer of admission is accepted, students entering the BSW from 㽶Ƶ with a completed or incomplete degree are not required to act. The School of Social Work will review and recommend credits to transfer into the BSW.
Transfer Credits, Courses/Term & GPA

- The grades received for these courses do not transfer, nor will the grades be included in the calculation of the GPA.
- Transfer credits for courses taken at McGill as part of a completed degree before entering the BSW will be indicated on your McGill transcript.
- The grades you received for these courses do not transfer, nor will the grades be included in the calculation of your GPA
- Transfer credits for courses taken at McGill as part of an incomplete degree before entering the BSW (students admitted as Intra/Inter-Faculty Transfer to the BSW) will be indicated on your McGill transcript.
- The credits and GPA for the transferred courses will roll over into your BSW transcript and be part of your GPA.
- Credits and GPA for courses that are not transferred will be excluded [EXC] from your record.
