Cognitive Science is the multidisciplinary study of cognition in humans and machines. It encompasses the traditional disciplines of psychology, computer science, neuroscience, linguistics and philosophy. The goal of cognitive science is to understand the principles of intelligence with the hope that this will lead to better comprehension of the mind and of learning and to develop intelligent devices that extend human abilities.
The Interfaculty Program in Cognitive Science is truly interdisciplinary. The Program Director, Dr. Ian Gold, has a background in both philosophy and neuroscience, and the faculty representatives for the program are from the fields of linguistics, neuroscience, computer science and psychology.
