Contingent régulier

These Ministry of Health funded positions are filled via for the R-1 entry level in either Family Medicine or Specialty Programs, accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). These positions are funded by the MSSS.

Candidate Eligibility

  1. Must hold Canadian citizenship/permanent resident of Canada status. Quebec medical graduates who require a student visa are eligible to apply for a position at McGill via this route only.ÌýIn Quebec, we are unable to consider applications via the CaRMS R-1 Match from visa students who obtain their MD fromÌýa Canadian medical school outside of Quebec in the contingent regulier quota; A visa student currently registered in a Canadian Medical School outside of Quebec must apply under the contingent particulier quota;
  2. Must hold a Medical doctorate from Canadian or US LCME accredited medical school/faculty; must have been awarded by July 1stÌýof the admission year.ÌýThe (CMQ) verifies the equivalence of all medical degrees issued by a Canadian medical school outside of Quebec and by all American medical schools.ÌýThis is required in order for the CMQ to issue the resident training card, which is required in order to be able to train in Quebec hospitals and be paid by the Ministry of Health.
  3. Must not have undertaken previous postgraduate (residency and/or fellowship)Ìýtraining in Canada or in the USA.
  4. Must meet the Criteria for recency of practice or medical studies:

Applicants must be able to demonstrate with official documentation that they have, within the four years preceding the admission application:

  • completed their undergraduate medical education (Doctor of Medicine, MD); or
  • been in a residency program; or
  • practiced medicine independently*; or
  • successfully completed the CEDIS program (assessment/orientation session and medical skills and knowledge refresher internship)

Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate that they have had a sustained and continuous independent clinical practice for a minimum duration of one year within the four years preceding the application.

* Please note that observerships and telemedicine are not considered independent clinical practice.


Graduates of a United States osteopathic school accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation are also eligible under the above criteria.

An American medical graduate seeking postgraduate training in Québec who is an American Citizen and not a dual citizen (Canada/USA), must apply under the contingent particulier quota.

Additional information for International Medical Graduates:

International Medical Graduates who have completed the equivalence process and who have not undertaken previous postgraduate (residency and/or fellowship) training in Canada or in the USA, may apply via , provided they complete the application process before the deadline.

Individuals who participate in the 1st iteration of the CaRMS match, but are not matched, can participate in the 2nd iteration, the results of which will be known on March 4, 2025. Individuals may participate in the 2nd iteration of CaRMS in Quebec, if they received the equivalency of their MD diploma from the CMQ between December 1st, 2024 and April 4, 2025.Ìý

Upon being matched, trainees must and submit required registration documents.Ìý
