  • French Proficiency Condition of Admission

Students admitted to the integrated OMFS-MDCM program are required to have intermediate level proficiency in French by the time they begin the MDCM portion of the program (winter of Year 1), as they will be in clinical environments where French is essential for patient safety and for full participation in clinical training activities in our healthcare system in Quebec. For a free, unofficial self-assessment, see ; the equivalent Canadian Language Benchmark level is approximately 6 to 8.

Admitted students must submit proof of proficiency or exemption. If you are not exempt or have no proof of proficiency, you will receive instructions to register (cost covered by the residency program) and complete online written and oral proficiency tests with McGill’s School of Continuing Studies in November immediately following your acceptance. If your level is lower than B2 (intermediate) for either oral or written communication, as a condition of admission you will be required to register for French course(s) for all terms prior to joining the MDCM program (Winter, Summer, Fall), or until you have reached B2 proficiency. Online evening or weekend courses focusing on healthcare are offered by McGill’s School of Continuing Studies. The Ï㽶ÊÓƵ office will also assess the equivalency of other university or college level courses upon request.

Students who have not attained intermediate proficiency before the MDCM portion of the program will be required to meet with the Program Director. Possible outcomes include but are not limited to: removal from the program, or deferral of one year of the program until the B2 proficiency level is reached.
