MURA Reception for New Members

The energy and camaraderie was truly flowing among the 45 attendees at this year's reception for new members. Members enjoyed catching up with colleagues, making new friends and meeting the MURA Executive & Board. Past-Principal Suzanne Fortier was presented with 听a lifetime honorary membership for her unwavering support of MURA during her tenure at McGill. (Photos)

Fireside chat with The Right Honourable David L. Johnston

Over forty members had the pleasure of attending a cozy fireside chat with The Right Honourable David L. Johnston, C.C., Governor General of Canada, 2010-2017, and Chair of the Rideau Hall Foundation. The chat was moderated by Michael C. Kiefer, McGill鈥檚 first VP Advancement, who posed questions submitted by members before the event. Various topics included Canadian multi-culturalism and the role of the monarchy in our constitution. He talked about his book Trust: Twenty ways to build a better country, which explores ways to ensure individuals, their institutions and their country are more worthy of trust. The chat was followed by a book signing where many retirees had the opportunity to meet with their former esteemed colleague.

The Rideau Hall Foundation serves Canadians through a range of initiatives linked to learning, leadership, giving and innovation.

Walking Tour - Demystifying the Mile End
Monday, September 12, 2022, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Eighteen members participated in a walking tour of the Mile End neighbourhood where they learned the answers to many questions: why is the area called Mile End, why are Montreal's two most famous bagel bakeries located there, what communities call (or called) it home? They saw how it is a crazy mix of mansions and workers' flats, stylish inter-war apartment blocks and 21st-century coops, small (and large) local businesses, workshops, factories, warehouses and much else. This tour certainly provided information that decoded the Mile End's mysteries. After the tour members quenched their thirsts and enjoyed a delightful meal at the on St. Laurent.

Thirty-five members enjoyed a visit to the听Frida Kahlo, The Life of an Icon exhibit. They experienced an immersive biography that offered a journey into the life of one of the most important artists of all time. The innovative proposal explored the artist's biography through an assortment of archival photos, original films, digital environments, art installations, collectibles and new musical pieces. Twenty-three attendees had a wonderful time catching up with each other after the exhibit at the听.

Seventeen MURA members enjoyed a guided walking tour of the Quartier des spectacles,听a major urban planning听realization, with an exceptional set of amenities for holding outdoor cultural eventsand听a major pull for tourism. With听a university campus (UQAM)听and听a historic faubourg first urbanized over 200 years ago, members discovered听how the old and the new mesh together in the听2km explored from听Place des Arts听to St-Denis Street. After the tour, members听had听a delightful luncheon听on the terrasse of the 3 Brasseurs restaurant.

MURA Annual General Meeting
June 1, 2022, 4 鈥� 6 p.m. via Zoom

Members attended this year鈥檚 AGM where they discussed the annual report, approved the financial review for 2021-22, set the $25 annual membership fee, and voted on the budget for the coming year. Participants acclaimed the new Vice-Principal Internal, Rosemary Cooke, and a third term for the Treasurer, Robert Stanley. The new Board for 2022-2023 was also acclaimed. It was announced that Kate Maguire, the outgoing VP Internal will continue to serve as Webmaster and Communications Coordinator.

The new MURA website was presented by Kate Maguire as well as the results of this year's members survey. An animated discussion followed on the survey and MURA鈥檚 overall activities. Rosemary Cooke pronounced the toast to MURA's 7th anniversary, and a lively virtual get-together concluded the meeting.

About 20 new and current members had the pleasure of meeting each other for the first time and reconnecting virtually with colleagues. MURA is looking forward to hosting a welcome reception for new members in the fall. 听

On March 29, 2022, 119 people watched a virtual joint lecture from the McGill Community for Lifelong Learning (MCLL) and the 香蕉视频 Retiree Association (MURA), presented by McGill medical researcher, Dr. Jos茅 A. Morais, MD, FRCPC, CSPQ, and Director of the Division of Geriatric Medicine, 香蕉视频.

Virtual Gourmet Cooking Class
Wednesday, March 16, 2022, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Twenty members enjoyed a virtual cooking class on Wednesday, March 16th. They had a great time cooking along with 听听master chef Erwann of the . Attendees followed his step-by-step instructions and professional tips on how to prepare a delicious main course (pan roasted salmon in a garlic cream sauce served with a ratatouille), and dessert (no-bake cheesecake with chocolate-covered popcorn). 听Since every picture tells a story 鈥� take a look at these photos of the meals created by some of the attendees!!!听

McGill Library Information Workshop
Thursday, February 24, 2022, 2-3:30 p.m.

MURA hosted a virtual workshop conducted by听April Colosimo听that provided a comprehensive review of the McGill Library collections and services. Participants learned how to find books, music, and videos in the new catalogue (Sofia), locate them in a library or access them electronically from anywhere in the world. Information was also provided about the Libby application that will replace Overdrive by the end of this year.
听
