Rodin Number: 03
E Number: none
Donor: Osler
Date: 1876
Size (H x W cm): 11.5 x 10

The specimen shows vegetations of varying size on all three aortic valve leaflets. One of the leaflets appears to be partly destroyed.

Comment

Although the descriptive card suggests the valves are thickened from previous attacks of endocarditis, in fact the leaflets appear normal apart from the vegetations. The case history and autopsy findings are described in Osler's 1877 Autopsy Book (PDF icon rodin_oslerian_pathology_209.pdf). It is possible that the "thickening" referred to on the card is related to Osler's statement in this that "(the) endocardium beneath the valves (is) much thickened".
