Dr. Marie-Claude Geoffroy: Education’s Newly Appointed Canada Research Chair (Tier 2)
Along with 25 of her McGill peers, Dr. Marie-Claude Geoffroy (Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology) was recently awarded a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) for her outstanding work in Youth Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. This major national honour is awarded to exceptional emerging researchers and leaders in their chosen fields, as acknowledged by their peers.
Youth suicide and mental health is a top research priority in Canada and at McGill. By age 25, 1 out of 5 Canadians will have developed a mental disorder and suicide is the 2nd cause of death. Despite its devastating impact, little progress has been made in the understanding and treatment of suicidal behaviours and related mental disorders. Dr. Geoffroy’s research aims to identify bio-psycho-social factors at play in the development of suicidal behaviors and developing low-cost interventions to help at-risk populations combat suicidal thoughts and mental disorders.
