Guest Speaker: "Islamophobia and the Politics of Extremism"

Wednesday, April 1, 2020 12:00to13:30
Education Building Room 233, 3700 rue McTavish, Montreal, QC, H3A 1Y2, CA

Over the last decade, policies to counter extremism have spread globally and the concept of "extremism" has become a key signifier of Islamophobic discourse. How should we understand Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) policies, the regimes of surveillance they enable, and the racialized notions of Muslimness they construct? What does an anti-racist and antifascist approach to the politics of extremism look like?

Arun Kundnani, Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication, New York University (NYU) will address these topics. Organized by the Canada Research Chair in Social Movement Learning and Knowledge
Production, with support from the Institute for Islamic Studies, McGill.
