Daniel Powell (BCom'21, GCPA'22), student of the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting (GCPA) program, has been selected among his graduating class as this year’s recipient of the C. Douglas Mellor Prize for academic excellence.

The prize, which is valued at $2,750, is named after Douglas Mellor, the first Executive Director of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Quebec, now the Ordre des comptables agrĂ©es du QuĂ©bec, and is awarded each year to honour Mellor’s enduring contributions to both Ď㽶ĘÓƵ and his profession.

Théadora Sauvé (BCom’22) believes that the power of the Law can be a powerful tool in making peace. The 2022 Valedictorian has plans to study Law at McGill, and was recently named one of 11 purposeful women leaders who are positively impacting the world. Sauvé has taken on a leadership role with Million Peacemakers, a youth initiative that seeks to co-create a culture of peace. To promote conflict resolution, the organization plans to work with other youth-led organizations and educational institutions.

The future of energy needs to be flexible, according to Éric Lachance (BCom’96), the CEO of Énergir. The company is seeking to replace natural gas with renewable energy generated by hydro, solar and wind. But the alternatives need to fit the situation. Quebec’s short winter days could make wind a better option than solar, says Lachance.

When Louis Morissette (BCom’95) was studying at Desautels, he was also performing in comedy shows. And when he went to the École Nationale de l’humour, he found himself wondering what the business plan for comedy could be.

In the years since then, he’s figured it out. Morissette is the co-founder and President of the production company KOTV and has been an actor and producer for television and film.

The McGill Sports Hall of Fame is honouring Desautels graduate Ann-Sophie Bettez (BCom '11) as part of its Class of 2022. Bettez’s induction follows a decorated university hockey career in which she was named the CIS rookie of the year as a first-year student, and Canadian university hockey player of the year as a senior. That same year, Bettez was also McGill's top female athlete and won the BLG Award as Canada’s top female student-athlete.

While he was still a law student, Dick Pound (BCom’62, BCL’67) competed in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. But that was only the beginning of the Desautels alumnus’ decades-long involvement in the Olympic movement. Pound was elected to the International Olympic Committee in 1978, and is now its longest-serving member. He has been the IOC’s Vice-President and the President of the World Anti-Doping Agency, and as he approaches retirement, he credits his success to a no-nonsense approach and an ability to get the job done.

Théadora Sauvé’s classmates pushed her to become a better student, and Sauvé’s hard work was be recognized at the Spring 2022 Convocation, where she gave the valedictory address. The Bachelor of Commerce grad is preparing to study law at McGill, but when she came to university, this path was not yet clear. Sauvé initially studied psychology, but switched to Desautels after taking an Organizational Behaviour class taught by Chantal Westgate, a Senior Faculty Lecturer.

Thibault Trancart (BCom'15), Desautels Faculty of Management's first blind graduate, is helping make one of the world’s biggest consumer goods companies more accessible. Trancart is a Manager in Responsible Beauty for Europe Hair Care at Procter & Gamble, and has become one of its Accessibility Champions. “Originally, I didn’t want to be the blind guy working on accessibility,” he says. But Trancart, intrigued by the practicality of the work, now addresses the challenges he personally faces. “I’m 80-90% on accessibility and can’t see myself doing anything else.”

The second week of May marks the start of the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting (GCPA) Program for a new cohort of 50 students. Forty-five of the incoming students are Ď㽶ĘÓƵ Bachelor of Commerce graduates, while the remaining join the program from other Canadian Universities.

In March, Clément Secchi earned All-Canadian honours at the Canadian university swim championships. Now, Secchi has qualified to represent France at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Budapest this June. The fourth-year management student won the 100m butterfly at the French Elite Championships with a personal best time, and will swim the butterfly leg of the 4x100 metre for the country’s medley relay team.

Abigail Hunter (BCom’16) wants to usher in the clean energy revolution. She represents the Government of Quebec as an attachée in Washington, DC, where she works to help lawmakers understand the benefits of working with Québec – like how its hydroelectricity and energy storage can supplement less predictable solar and wind energy generation. While at Desautels, Hunter learned about impact investing, social enterprise and advancing ethical, social and governance standards. She credits this education with helping her choose a career path.

Congratulations to BCom students Idir Hamrioui, Marc-Antoine Millaire, LĂ©o Tousignant and Anthony Ladal, who won the 2022 Van Berkom Small Cap Case Competition hosted by JMSB March 25 and 26. In the final round the team of four was up against 8 other teams including another from Desautels. The team keeps up a winning tradition, as a delegation from Desautels won last year's edition of the competition.
