Rappelling down a 650-foot cliff to catch seabirds on a remote island just below the Arctic Circle was scary enough.
“The first time you look over and you rappel over, it’s certainly not for the faint of heart,” said Kyle Elliott, a research chair in Arctic ecology at Ď㽶ĘÓƵ in Canada.
But for Elliott and fellow researcher Emile Brisson Curadeau, it was the hungry polar bears (Ursus maritimus) — usually one a day walking near their cabin — that raised real concerns, and devoured their research subjects.

Improving the comfort and longevity of dairy cows can improve dairy farm sustainability and profitability. This is the premise of the Industrial Research Chair in the Sustainable Life of Dairy Cattle, launched in 2016 and led by Dr. Elsa Vasseur of Ď㽶ĘÓƵ. Preliminary results of multiple studies presented in May 2019 by the scientist and her team show promise for new and innovative approaches to cow comfort and longevity.

New study suggests pectin and cellulose involved in molecular mechanism defining plant cell morphology
The discovery of the mechanics and molecular mechanism that dictate cell shape formation in plants by a team of McGill researchers offers new clues about the fundamental processes governing tissue formation in multicellular organisms.
Plants are made of cells that come in a wide array of shapes and sizes, each of which is closely related and essential to the function of a specific tissue.

Stéphanie Bélanger-Naud est devenue la meilleure bûcheronne au Canada, le 27 juillet dernier, en remportant le championnat canadien Stihl Timbersport à Mississauga, en Ontario.
Le championnat comporte trois épreuves qui consistent à couper de larges billots de bois avec des scies différentes ou à la hache, et ce, le plus rapidement possible. Le pointage cumulé à la fin de la compétition déterminait la grande gagnante parmi les six bûcheronnes participantes.

Congratulations to Dr. Pierre Lacasse, an Adjunct Professor in Animal Science, who has been made a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Animal Science (CSAS) in a recent annual meeting in Austin, Texas. The fellowship is awarded to CSAS members for truly outstanding contributions in any field of animal agriculture.
