The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Jérémy Boulanger-Bonnelly has received the 2023 John W. Durnford Award for Teaching Excellence.

Named in honour of the late professor and former dean John W. Durnford (BCL'52), and conferred by students, this award each year recognizes a law professor’s exceptional pedagogy.

He will receive the award during the Law Convocation ceremony on 31 May.

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce three professorial appointments for the 2023-2024 academic year.  

Michelle Cumyn will join the Faculty of Law as full professor, Noah Weisbord as associate professor, and Jeffrey Kennedy as assistant professor. They will begin their appointments on 1 August 2023.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Fabien Gélinas, Ad E, has been reappointed as holder of a Sir William C. Macdonald chair, and Professor Geneviève Saumier, as Peter M. Laing QC Professor of Law. Both have these chairs since 2016. Their renewed seven-year terms will commence on 1 May 2023.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Sébastien Jodoin received 㽶Ƶ’s Changemaker Prize on 28 March.

Under the aegis of the Principal’s Prize for Public Engagement through Media, this prize is awarded to an individual whose dedication to sharing their knowledge with the media and public has had a major impact on society. Awarded at the jury’s discretion on an exceptional basis, the Changemaker Prize recognizes a scholar who serves as a role model in public engagement across the university.

The Faculty of Law was once again ranked among the world’s top universities at which to study law by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject in Law and Legal Studies placed McGill Law 29th worldwide, up two spots from 2022.

Since QS introduced the ranking in 2011, the Faculty of Law has consistently placed in the top 35 institutions globally. The QS ranking is based on academic reputation, employer reputation, H-index citations, and citations per paper. McGill Law’s academic reputation was scored the highest in Canada.

Elizabeth Carmichael Monk made history by becoming one of the first women called to the Quebec Bar. Her accomplished career in corporate and real estate law spanned over five decades of great social transformation. By naming a new philanthropically funded chair in business law after her, the Faculty of Law intends to honour the legacy of this pioneering alumna.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Adelle Blackett, FRSC, Ad E, has received a doctorate honoris causa from the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain). She was presented with the award at a ceremony held on 16 February. The day prior, she delivered the lecture associated with her award, entitled "De la métaphore à la mémoire: Restituer l’histoire de l’esclavage dans les débats sur les formes contemporaines d’esclavage."

The 2022 United Nations Biodiversity Conference of the Parties (COP15) was held in Montreal on December 7-19, 2022. The conference’s outcome agreement, known as “30×30” means the protection of 30 per cent of land and oceans by 2030.
