Admission review process
Select your diploma:
Pre-University DEC
You must have obtained, prior to the start of classes, a Diplôme d’études collégiales (DEC).
Your application is reviewed on your overall R-Score (as determined by the Ministry) as well as a core R-Score average of any prerequisite courses (calculated by McGill's 㽶Ƶ Office). The courses included in the core average differ depending on the program to which you have you applied.
- A science core average includes all 101 biology, 201 mathematics, 202 chemistry, and 203 physics.
- An engineering core average includes all 201 mathematics, 202 chemistry and 203 physics.
- A management core average includes all 201 mathematics courses.
The R-score is the principal metric for admission of CEGEP applicants to 㽶Ƶ. Applicants must meet both the required global R score and the required prerequisite average R score in order to be offered admission.
While the R-scores are the main determinants, we look at all results; multiple failures and repeated courses will also be taken into consideration.
McGill uses the overall R-Score (not the program R-Score) when reviewing applications. However, applicants who have changed programs and whose performance has improved significantly after the change, should inform McGill by checking the “extenuating circumstances” box on the application and providing a personal statement about their CEGEP experience. In exceptional cases, the McGill decision may be based on a selection of CEGEP grades.
For programs where science and/or math are prerequisites, these must normally have been completed within the last five years.
If graduating with a DEC in “Sciences, lettres, et arts" or a DEC in "Computer Science and Mathematics", you are eligible for admission to most undergraduate programs. You may be required to complete any missing portion of prerequisites at McGill in addition to, or as part of, your program requirements.
If graduating with the IB Diploma from a Quebec CEGEP, you will be considered on your CEGEP equivalent results, and you are eligible for admission to most undergraduate programs. You may be required to complete any missing portion of prerequisites at McGill in addition to, or as part of, your program requirements.
If graduating with a DEC sans mention, you must have completed all prerequisite courses for the program to which you are applying.
Note: Candidates who intend to register for a summer course at CEGEP during the term preceding their admission to the University are requested to notify the admissions department in writing by June 10 at the latest, specifying the name and code of the summer course, as well as the reasons for which they intend to take it. Before entering their program at McGill, admitted students must have completed their DEC, otherwise admission may be canceled.
Technical DEC
If graduating with a three-year technical DEC, you may be eligible for admission to certain undergraduate programs. Please consult the Pre-requisite CEGEP courses for admission for 2023-2024(updates coming soon).
All results are taken into consideration in determining admission, including those for failed or repeated courses.
For programs where science and/or math are prerequisites, these must normally have been completed within the last five years.
Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences: For detailed information regarding entry to programs offered by the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences please see mcgill.ca/undergraduate-admissions/tech-dec
French Baccalaureate (at Collège Marie de France and Collège Stanislas in Quebec)
For most programs, your application is reviewed on your 'bulletins' (with results on 20) from ʰè and Terminale or, if you have already graduated, on your final ‘Bac’ results. In addition, we take into consideration the Relevé des notes obtenue en Premiére, and any Attestation de cours compléments Québecois “validé”. While a diploma in “premier groupe” with “mention assez bien” is the minimum expected, most programs are more competitive and will require higher results.
Consult the minimum grades accepted for admission last year(updates coming soon).
NOTE: Dentistry, Law and Medicine review applicants on their R Score. Music reviews applicants on their percentage grades. For more information, please consult directly with the appropriate admissions office.
All results are taken into consideration in determining admission, including those for failed or repeated courses.
To be eligible to apply to Dentistry, Dietetics,Medicine, Neuroscience, Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy, the completion of complementary coursework (‘compléments’) will be required.
Other Quebec Schools
Requirements:
- Applicants from Quebec’s Alexander von Humbolt German School (Abitur) will be reviewed on school transcripts covering the last three years of schooling, including 1st semester of Grade 12. Students are reviewed on the requirements for international high school applicants.
- Applicants from Lower Canada College and Stanstead College (Grade 12 or the IB Diploma) will be reviewed on school transcripts covering the last three years of schooling, including 1st trimester/mid-year of Grade 12 and IB predictions (if applicable). Students at these schools must contact their school guidance counsellor for information on McGill application procedures.
- Applicants from Quebec schools offering another recognized curriculum such as the Ontario OSSD or the New Brunswick NBSSD will be reviewed on requirements in place for Ontario and other Canadian provinces.
Students completing a Quebec Secondary V Diploma only are not directly admissible to undergraduate study at McGill. Depending on availability of space, Quebec high school Secondary V graduates who will have completed a minimum of one full year of university study outside Quebec may be considered as Transferapplicants. Courses completed at schools or institutions designed primarily to offer religious education (such as bible colleges, seminaries, or yeshivas) normally are not considered equivalent to university study.
Prerequisites and R-Scores cut-offs
Below you will find the R-Score minimums for admission for September 2024. These values do not represent the R-Score required for future admission. R-Score minimums can fluctuate from one year to the next.
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
When a program is highly competitive, applicants who present all prerequisites generally have an advantage. However, students may be accepted with a minimum of three prerequisites including: Math NYA plus any two science prerequisites. If admitted, any missing courses will be added to the program at McGill. Students graduating with a DEC in “Sciences, lettres, et arts” (700.A0) are eligible for all programs. They will NOT be disadvantaged during the admission process if they did not complete all prerequisites. Depending on their B.Sc. (Ag.Env.Sc.) program, they may be required to complete any missing portion of prerequisites at McGill in addition to their program requirements.
Entrance requirements to the B.Sc. (Ag.Env.Sc.) from a DEC in Social Science:
When a program is highly competitive, applicants who present all prerequisites generally have an advantage*.
