The Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (FAES), one of the 11 faculties of Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, is at the forefront of advances in research and teaching in applied biological, food, nutritional and environmental sciences. FAES is located on the 650-hectare of Macdonald Campus, at the western end of Montreal island. It offers unique multidisciplinary research programs that bring together health, environment, food and nutrition, bioproducts, biotechnology and agricultural sectors.Ìý
Part of FAES, the Macdonald Campus Farm is a 205-hectare experimental demonstration farm dedicated to teaching and research and strives to be an innovative leader at the cutting edge of agricultural technology. It is also aware of its responsibility to introduce, engage and educate the public about sustainable food production and environmental stewardship.Ìý
The Macdonald Campus farm welcomes approximately 6,000 visitors per year, an ever-increasing demand, the new Centre of Excellence for Agriculture project will increase the farm's ability to receive visitors by providing an appropriate location for flexible use, and will provide educational activities and programs to the public.
Project Scope:
The electrical substation of the Macdonald Farm is in the Old Dairy Barn (building #409). It supplies power to buildings #401, 409, 410, 509, 520, and it will supply power to the future Centre for Excellence in Agriculture (project 20-058).Ìý
Several components are at the end of their useful life: parts aren’t commercially available anymore and, therefore, the substation cannot accommodate new loads. Several projects in the sector will result in an increase in power demand including projects in the Physical Infrastructure portfolio, Research portfolio, and Development portfolio.
The objectives of the project are to:
1) replace end-of-life systems and equipmentÌý
2) increase the distribution capacity of the substation to account for identified projects
Following validation with Campus Planning and Physical Portfolio Management, the substation will remain in its current location.
