LAURA BERTRAND is an MA student in the Department of English at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ. Her SSHRC-funded master’s thesis synthesizes fashion theory, feminist theory, critical race theory, and aesthetic theory in early 20th century literature from the Harlem Renaissance. More specifically, she analyzes how black female protagonists negotiate their social value through their sartorial choices in novels by Nella Larsen and Jessie Redmon Fauset. Her broader interests include modernist poetry, early 20th century feminist literature, and dress history of the 19th and 20th centuries.
