Pain Education in Nursing

The nurse plays a key role in pain management among various patient populations and context of care. The nurse’s professional role in pain management is to:

  • Assess pain upon patient’s admission and on a regular basis thereafter or during consultation or follow-up visits
  • Administer appropriate analgesia (as per prescription) according to pain assessment findings
  • Reassess pain to determine the efficacy of analgesia and readjust the dosage as needed
  • Ensure clinical monitoring following the administration of opioid analgesia
  • Administer or initiate non-pharmacologic interventions for optimal pain control
  • Write and adjust the nursing therapeutic plan
  • Educate the patient and family about pain management In nursing, pain education is covered in various courses part of two undergraduate programs (BScN and BNI) and the Master’s program.
