Tissue Engineering

The application of autologous, vascularized free flaps to the Craniomaxillofacial region has significantly advanced the reconstruction of segmental bone defects. The potential for further progress lies in the application of bone-tissue engineering, which improves on many of the limitations of conventional reconstructive practices. The principal factor to success of BTE is the presence of robust vascular networks. Our research is focused on applying novel micro-surgical techniques to augment vascularization of biocompatible scaffolds. Specific areas of focus include the arteriovenous loop model and therapeutic arteriogenesis, as promising strategies to optimize vascular supply in clinically relevant scaffolds. Ultimately, with the current void in morbidity free reconstruction techniques, we aim to develop a reliable and refined surgical technique to generate tissue engineered free flaps.
