Pediatric OMS and Cleft/Craniofacial Surgery

The subspecialty of pediatric craniomaxillofacial surgery plays an important role in the care of infants, children and adolescents with a variety of congenital, developmental and acquired conditions of the craniomaxillofacial complex.

The pediatric division works closely with the general practice pediatric dental residents, orthodontists, pediatric dentists, and pediatricians at providing the highest standard of care for the growing child. Specialized care of pediatric patients can include behavior management, treatment of maxillofacial trauma and diagnosis and management of maxillofacial pathologies that are found in the pediatric population.

At the MUHC, the oral and maxillofacial surgery team is an integral member of the Cleft Lip and Palate and Craniofacial Multidisciplinary team that includes Audiology, Genetics, Orthodontics, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Dentistry, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Speech Language Pathology. Together, we collaborate to offer comprehensive diagnosis and treatment planning through a staged reconstructive approach. Specifically the oral and maxillofacial team performs a number of surgeries that help to normalize speech, correct dental occlusion and improve facial appearance and function, as well as raise self-esteem, which is especially critical in the developing child and adolescent.
