Jesse Klostranec, MD, PhD
Dr. Klostranec is a diagnostic neuroradiologist and neurointerventional radiologist trained at the University of Toronto and the Université de Montréal. At the end of his fellowship he worked part time as a NIR at Health Sciences North in Sudbury Ontario where he helped kick-start their Stroke NIR program in 2020. He has been an assistant professor of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology at the MUHC since November 2020.
His therapeutic NIR practice includes:
- mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke
- embolization of intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, dural arteriovenous fistulas, subdural hematomas, and tumours
- angioplasty and stenting of extracranial and intracranial atherosclerosis, and in select cases, venous stenting
- spinal angiography and related endovascular treatments
- a wide variety of minimally invasive spine procedures, including nerve root and facet blocks, synovial and Tarlov cyst treatments, vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, and radiofrequency ablation of tumours
Dr. Klostranec has a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and BEng in Aerospace Engineering. Dr. Klostranec’s principle clinical and research interests revolve around diagnosing and treating diseases of the cerebrovascular system and conditions of altered cerebrospinal fluid dynamics in adult and pediatric patients. This includes developing clinical imaging techniques that assess the physiology of the glymphatic network, a special and unique “circulation” system for the interstitial and cerebrospinal fluid of the central nervous system. Such clinical tools have promising potential to aid in diagnosing, assessing progression, and therapeutic monitoring of numerous complex neurological pathologies, including dementias, hydrocephalus, traumatic brain injury, brain tumours, and stroke. Other research interests include understanding the clinical manifestations of dysfunctional angiogenesis and the development of diagnostic and therapeutic biomedical devices.
