Her unbounded dedication to enriching the lives of all students, as well as her joyful collegiality, have truly made her an irreplaceable member of the Schulich family.
To honour Cindy’s longstanding commitment to McGill, the Cindy Shuter Masterclass Fund will provide the resources to invite distinguished guests to the School each year, offering valuable learning opportunities and inspiration to Schulich School of Music flute students on an ongoing basis.

Cindy’s Students Sing her Praises
Cindy knows how to push her students to their full potential and believes in her students more than they believe in themselves. I certainly wouldn't have been successful in my pursuit without Cindy's unfaltering dedication to her students' personal and musical growth.Ìý
Kelly Herrmann BMus’13, flute performance
Ms. Shuter has greatly impacted my academic achievements at McGill. She always engages her students in the learning process; she works carefully with the student and tailors her teaching to their needs. She also knows how to make every lesson interesting and memorable. It is never a dull moment in her teaching studio.

Cindy's Teaching Philosophy
Teaching is a delicate balance of subject matter expertise, patience, firmness, discipline, discretion, and a genuine love of young people.Ìý Specifically in music performance, we must cultivate a passion for music and its interpretation while teaching the techniques, literature and pedagogy of an instrument.
I try to use varied and imaginative methods to tailor my instruction to the needs of each individual student. Whether coaching ensembles or giving flute lessons, I aim to develop students who have not only mastered their playing skills to the best of their ability but have also explored how to fully express their musicianship and discovered their own voice.
My mandate has always been to do the most I possibly could, in terms of time and effort, for all these wonderful young people who have been entrusted to my care during this precious stage of their development.ÌýÌý I have been blessed to have this opportunity.
