About the McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble
The McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble (CME) is a high-level chamber orchestra entirely dedicated to both twentieth century repertoire and composers of our times. Founded in 1970, it has been directed successively by Richard Lawton and Eugene Plawutsky (1970-1986), Bruce Mather (1986-1996), Denys Bouliane (1996-2013), and Guillaume Bourgogne (2015-2022). The CME is currently under the direction of conductor Mélanie Léonard.
Performing four programs per season, the CME promotes Canadian and international new music. This includes the annual performance of four new works by resident composers and collaborations with important Canadian and foreign composers, distinguished faculty members, and students.
Its objective is to transmit the knowledge of the new music repertoire and teach the newest playing techniques used by the contemporary composers. The CME is involved with many research projects and symposiums in the fields of technology, composition and musicology.
