McGill’s all-in commitment to sustainability is expressed at an extraordinary level with the development of the $870M . Sustainability Systems form one of the three pillars of the New Vic Academic Plan, along with Teaching & Learning and Public Policy. The New Vic will provide the largest single sustainability and public policy research facility in the World.

The MSSI will be central in the development of the New Vic Academic Plan. It has always been intended that the MSSI would be the eventual organizing structure of the research activity to be undertaken in the New Vic. The New Vic will be home to specific sustainability clusters—Molecular/Materials Systems, Earth Systems, and Urban Systems—while the MSSI will continue to support sustainability systems research across McGill.
