The superior (St) and inferior (I) pulmonary veins join behind the heart to form a single vessel which enters the hilum of the liver (G = gall bladder; St = stomach). An anterior view (B) shows a dilated right atrium (A) and ventricle (V), reflecting the marked increase in combined pulmonary and systemic blood flow.
