Description
The specimen shows an opened right ventricle with the pulmonary valve above. The latter has four instead of the normal three cusps. A blue rod is seen in a patent ductus arteriosus.
Comment
Supernumerary valve leaflets (typically a quadricuspid pulmonary valve as in this case) occur rarely (0.001 to 0.003 live births) and are usually unassociated with symptoms or complications.
