Advanced Standing and/or Transfer Credits

What is the difference between transfer credits and exemptions?

  • Exemption: An exemption may be granted if you have completed a course at another institution that is equivalent to a McGill course. An exemption does not give you course credits. Rather, it means that you must take another course in the place of the one for which you receive the exemption. If you receive an exemption, you must consult your program requirements in the undergraduate calendar to determine what courses you can take instead.
  • Transfer credit and advanced standing: Transfer credit is credit toward your McGill program granted for courses taken at another institution. Transfer credit can be granted for a specific McGill course (if the coursework is deemed to be equivalent), or as a block of credits (i.e. for CEGEP graduates).
  • For foundation year courses, please contact your Student Affairs Office - OASIS听or SOUSA听if you have further questions. For Required Courses, please contact the Math and Stats Department to see what Complementary Courses a student can take.

Can I re鈥恡ake a course for which I have already received an exemption/transfer credit?

Make sure that you do not register for a course at McGill for which you have an exemption/transfer credit as you will not receive credit if you take the same course a second time. Please contact your Student Affairs Office - OASIS or SOUSA if you have further questions.

Should I wait for my credits to reflect on my record before I register for my courses?

No. If you are certain you will be granted credit for a course please register for the next level course. Please refer to the prospective and new student student website.

I was admitted into U1. Do I need to complete the Foundation Year Program requirements?
