Stéphanie Bélanger-Naud, meilleure bûcheronne au pays

Stéphanie Bélanger-Naud est devenue la meilleure bûcheronne au Canada, le 27 juillet dernier, en remportant le championnat canadien Stihl Timbersport à Mississauga, en Ontario.

Le championnat comporte trois épreuves qui consistent à couper de larges billots de bois avec des scies différentes ou à la hache, et ce, le plus rapidement possible. Le pointage cumulé à la fin de la compétition déterminait la grande gagnante parmi les six bûcheronnes participantes.

Il le sera d'autant s'il est servi froid, par exemple à cause d'un délai pour le découper en morceaux, a-t-elle dit.

Adjunct Professor Pierre Lacasse named a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Animal Science

Congratulations to Dr. Pierre Lacasse, an Adjunct Professor in Animal Science, who has been made a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Animal Science (CSAS) in a recent annual meeting in Austin, Texas. The fellowship is awarded to CSAS members for truly outstanding contributions in any field of animal agriculture. Dr. Lacasse is a research scientist in Sherbrooke Research and Development Centre, AAFC.

Boil-water advisory remains in effect at Macdonald Campus

Boil-water advisory remains in effect at Macdonald Campus

As we mentioned in an earlier message, a boil-water advisory is in effect across Macdonald and John Abbott Campus. It will remain in effect for at least another 48 hours.

The advisory does not apply to the staff residences located on Maple St., Macdonald High School nor the rest of Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, as these locations obtain their water from a different source.

Soil science specialist Joann Whalen awarded Auguste Scott Prize

Congratulations to NRS professor Joann Whalen, who was recently awarded the Auguste Scott prize given by the Association quebecoise de specialistes en science du sol (AQSSS). Other professors who won it previously were Dr. Gus Mackenzie and Dr. Guy Mehuys. The prize is awarded for outstanding contributions to the field of soil science.

McGill Researchers Collaborate on Breakthrough Research Projects with the National Research Council

Today [June 20], Iain Stewart, President of the National Research Council, Canada's largest federal research and development organization, announced the results of the inaugural round of the NRC’s New Beginnings Initiative. The New Beginnings Initiative is part of the NRC’s Ideation Fund, which was announced in Budget 2018 to encourage, test and validate transformative research ideas generated by NRC researchers working with external collaborators.

If you've been out in the Laurentians or the Eastern Townships lately, you may have noticed there've been a lot of flies - notably bigger varieties known as flesh flies.  

They have been seen invading those communities to the point where some restaurants had to shut down their terrasses and residents can't enjoy their backyards.

Quebec recalled frozen raspberries imported from Chile this week over concerns they might be contaminated with norovirus.

The norovirus is a highly contagious virus that continues to thrive when frozen and causes gastroenteritis, which manifests itself with diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain. The symptoms develop between 12 and 24 hours after exposure.

Entomologists fear urban beekeeping could be putting wild bees at risk

Some entomologists are sounding the alarm that native bees could be in danger of being wiped out, because of the popularity of urban beekeeping.

“The danger is that we’re probably losing species and don’t even know it,” says Gail MacInnis, a PhD entomology candidate at Ď㽶ĘÓƵ.  Something needs to be done, she says, to control the number of honeybees being raised.
