This page contains information on the areas that have been set aside specifically for McGill graduate students in library locations across campus:


Humanities and Social Sciences Library

Please note that our study areas are strictly reserved for McGill students.Ìý
In order to accommodate the volume of requests, the library does not grant study spaces to faculty members.

PhD study rooms

Applicants in the process of writing their dissertation may request a private space in a shared or individual PhD room.Ìý It will be assigned on a first come, first served basis for the entire academic year.

A common Graduate Study area is also accessible to all PhD students on the 6th floor of the McLennan LibraryÌýBuilding (Room M6-37A).

Carrels

Carrels are available to graduate students (Masters, PhD), as well as undergraduate Honours students. You may ask for a carrel by providing your McGill ID card at the Library Service Desk.

Carrels are assigned to qualifying students on a first-come-first-served basis. Books charged to a carrel borrower's card may be kept at the carrel during the term, as long as they are not requested by other library users.

Lockers

The Humanities and Social Sciences Library has 108 lockers on the third floor of the McLennan Library Building.

Terms of use:

  • Lockers are only available to graduate McGill students, as well as undergraduate Honours students
  • Students may request either a locker or a carrel, but not both
  • Library books kept in the lockers must be checked out to the borrower's card
  • Storing food in the locker is prohibited
  • McGill Libraries staff can request to check the content of the locker at any time
  • Students must supply their own locks, the library will not be responsible for lost or stolen personal property
  • Students who violate the terms of use will lose their locker privileges

Please come to the Library Service Desk with your McGill ID card during service hours.
Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis to qualifying students.

    Islamic Studies Library

    Reserved carrels

    The Islamic Studies Library has 50 study carrels for Islamic Studies graduate students, visiting scholars, and undergraduate Honours students writing theses. Carrels are available in the Octagon Room, in the Mirror Room and on the second floor.

    • Carrels are for the personal use of graduate students, eligible undergraduates, and Institute of Islamic Studies visiting scholars.
    • Designed for individual study, fitted with side partitions.
    • Books charged to a carrel borrower's card may be kept on hold during the session, as long as they are not requested by others.

    How to reserve a carrel:
    Carrels are assigned on a first come, first served basis to qualifying students.ÌýGraduate students can come to the Library Service Desk during service hours and provideÌýus with their McGill ID card.     Macdonald Campus Library

    Reserved storage cabinets

    The Macdonald Campus Library has 15 storage cabinets available for graduate students. Cabinets are located on level 3 of the library, and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis to qualifying students.

    Marvin Duchow Music Library

    Graduate students in Music have two options with respect to carrels and study rooms for their specific use in the Music Library. They may sign up for carrel space in the public reading areas of the 5th floor or they may request a carrel in A407 or A507 if they are preparing for their comprehensive exams.

    • Graduate students are entitled to apply for a reserved study space, to which library materials may be signed out.
    • There are 21 cubicles, and 48Ìýdesks in the open stacks.

    Schulich Library of Physical Sciences, Health Sciences, and Engineering

    Lockers

    The lockers on the 4th floor of the Schulich Library are available for loan by McGill graduate students, staff and faculty.

    To borrow a locker:
