Published: 24 September 2019

Sometime between September and November of this year, Apple is releasing their new operating system, Catalina. Unfortunately, this new operating system applications - this includes Endnote. Endnote is and is working on a major update so that Endnote X9 for Mac will continue to work. This update is not yet available. Library staff members are working with Endnote to confirm a date.

In the meantime, please note that Endnote X8 and earlier versions will not work with Catalina. This situation is only applicable to Mac users – PC users will not be affected.

What does this mean for McGill Mac users who use Endnote?

If you are Mac user and are running Endnote X8 or older, please upgrade to Endnote X9 immediately. There are Endnote X9 installer links on the Library’s and in the . Please check for an update to get the most current version of Endnote for Mac - Endnote X9.2.

---

To check and install the update:

  • With Endnote open, click Endnote X9 menu button (top left of screen)
  • Click Check for Updates…
  • Install update if prompted

Please remember to uninstall any older versions of Endnote. To uninstall:

  • Open the older version of Endnote
  • Click on Endnote X# (whatever version they have) menu button
  • Click Customizer…
  • Click Uninstall

---

It is our hope that by preemptively updating to Endnote X9.2, workflow issues will be avoided. An update on the release date Endnote X9.3 is forthcoming and will be found on the citation guide and KB. If it is like past Endnote updates, it will automatically get pushed to users. If this is the case, users will get a popup prompting an update of the software. Users may also run a quick check using the steps above.
