Library use policy

Highlights

  • Floors 1, 2 and the Cyberthèque of the McLennan-Redpath Library Building are designated as Conversation Zones, where conversations and videoconferencing (e.g. Zoom) are allowed (earbuds/earphones are required).
  • The McLennan lobby is the home of the Library’s main service point. Please respect users that are consulting with staff in this area by moving to a Conversation Zone for an online class or telephone call.
  • All other floors of the McLennan-Redpath Library Building are only available for quiet individual study. Conversation and other noise-making activities are not allowed in these areas; cellphones should be silenced.
  • Food and drink: Reusable water bottles or other sealed drink containers are permitted in library spaces. Water fountains are available throughout the building. At present, food is not permitted in the library.

General Library use

  1. Bring your valid McGill ID with you. It is required for identification, borrowing materials and access purposes and must be produced upon request. 
  2. Do not harass or threaten the well-being or dignity of library staff and other users.
  3. For your own protection, do not leave your personal belongings unattended. Unattended personal belongings may be removed by Security. Security and library staff will also wake students who are sleeping to prevent theft of their belongings.
  4. Library users are not permitted to save seats for others.
  5. The cafeteria on the Redpath Library street level is the space to purchase and consume food. Food and beverages (except for bottled water and other drinks in sealed containers) are not permitted in other locations throughout the Library. The selling or distribution of food or beverages, or having restaurant food delivered to the library, is not permitted. Users who do not comply with the Library Use Policy and who do not use garbage/ recycling bins to clean up will be required to leave.
  6. E-cigarettes and vaporizers are not permitted anywhere in the library (see McGill Smoking Policy).
  7. Do not disturb other users through such activities as discussions or telephone conversations, particularly in quiet study zones. There are specially designated areas for group study and other areas where quiet conversations and cell phone use are permitted. Mobile devices should be silenced throughout the library. 
  8. Drives (food, clothing, hygiene products, other items or books), canvassing, soliciting, or surveying library patrons are not permitted anywhere in the library.
  9. Library materials, facilities or equipment cannot be removed without authorization; familiarize yourself with borrowing conditions and the use of computers in the library and respect them. Do not deface, mutilate, inappropriately use or willfully deprive other users of library materials, facilities or equipment. Do not highlight, underline or write on the printed content. 
  10. Observe copyright, intellectual property rights and academic integrity when using library materials.
  11. To report a problem with library facilities or equipment, please visit the service desk.
  12. With the exception of service animals, animals are not permitted in the building.

Failure to follow the Policy above may result in fines, sanctions, or disciplinary actions.
