BLG makes generous donation to Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private & Comparative Law

Published: 4 July 2013

John G. Murphy, managing partner at Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG), is extremely proud of the efforts made by a team headed by H. John Godber (BCL'88, LLB'88) and Neil Hazan (BCL/LLB'02) to support McGill Faculty of Law’s Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law. The fundraising activity, which brought in $400,000 from BLG’s lawyers and partners across Canada, ended this month.

“We are very pleased both to have reached our objective and to have met our high expectations in terms of contributing to the advancement of work and research in civil and common law,” explained John G. Murphy.

“We are extremely grateful to BLG. These funds will help support the Centre through a number of initiatives, including a series of lectures and workshops on civil and common law, various research projects, and the creation of scholarships to support the work of doctoral and postdoctoral students,” emphasized Daniel Jutras, Dean of Law at 㽶Ƶ.

Both in recognition of the increasing importance of transnational legal practice in Canada and internationally and as a testament to its support of thought leadership in this area, BLG is a proud supporter of the McGill Law School’s Crépeau Centre, which is a world leader in promoting increased understanding between the two dominant western legal traditions.

The ties that link BLG to 㽶Ƶ’s Law School date back to the early 19th century, when the two institutions were in their infancy. This connection continues today through various projects of benefit to 㽶Ƶ law students, among others: the contributions towards the building of the Nahum Gelber Law Library, the Borden Ladner Gervais Professional Excellence Award, awarded to first-year law students who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to professional and service excellence, and BLG’s Summer Research Fellowship Program, which ended in 2011 and used to award scholarships to first-year law students to allow them to work with a faculty member over the summer on an innovative research project. Over 50 㽶Ƶ graduates are currently working as lawyers at BLG offices across Canada.

About the Paul-André Crépeau Centre

Founded in 1975 by Professor Paul-André Crépeau, the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law (formerly the Québec Research Centre of Private and Comparative Law) endeavours to promote the civilian tradition and develop it through a philosophy of openness to the lessons to be learned from other legal traditions.

The Crépeau Centre brings together legal scholars and academics from Quebec and abroad with a view to renewing the theoretical investigations of Quebec’s fundamental private law institutions.
