The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Michelle Cumyn will join the leadership team of the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law. She will team up with current director Professor Mark Antaki, BCL’96, LLB’96, who has been at the helm of the renowned centre since 2020. They will serve as co-directors until 2026.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce new and renewed support from the prestigious Canada Research Chair program for two professors.

Professor Jonas-Sébastien Beaudry has been named Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Health, Inclusion and Policy for a five-year term.

Professor Adelle Blackett, FRSC, Ad E, has been reappointed as Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Transnational Labour Law for a second seven-year term.

The first of November of 2023 officially marked the last day at the Center Crépeau for our very dear and precious Manon Berthiaume as the senior administrative coordinator. The first day of November not only permanently marked the history of the Center but also the relationships of deep and sincere friendship that this great woman, Manon Berthiaume, has always been and continues to be.

Professor Helge Dedek was named to the Wainwright Chair in Civil Law, held most recently by former dean Daniel Jutras, OC, Ad E.

Professor Frédéric Mégret was named to the Hans & Tamar Oppenheimer Chair in Public International Law, of which the inaugural chairholder was François Crépeau, OC, OQ, FRSC, Ad E.

On the occasion of our fall 2023 publication of the volume Successions of the Private Law Dictionary and Bilingual Lexicons series, the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law – in partnership with Éducaloi and Me Étienne Cossette-Lefebvre (Canada Graduate Scholar in Honour of Nelson Mandela and Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation grantee) – has created a series of videos with the goal of improving access to basic knowledge about succession (estate) law in Quebec.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Adelle Blackett, FRSC, Ad E, has received a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from Simon Fraser University (SFU). The honorary degree was bestowed upon her on 9 June at SFU’s Spring Convocation ceremony.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Adelle Blackett, FRSC, Ad E, has received a doctorate honoris causa from the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain). She was presented with the award at a ceremony held on 16 February. The day prior, she delivered the lecture associated with her award, entitled "De la métaphore à la mémoire: Restituer l’histoire de l’esclavage dans les débats sur les formes contemporaines d’esclavage."

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Adelle Blackett, FRSC, Ad E, has received an honorary doctorate of laws (LLD) from Queen’s University. She gave the commencement address at one of the University’s Fall Convocation ceremonies on 11 October.

“A prolific, world-class scholar in labour law and its interface with trade, [Adelle Blackett] is a key thinker behind the emerging field of transnational labour law, foregrounding decolonial approaches,” Queen’s University highlighted upon sharing the news of the award.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that, at a ceremony on 26 November, the University of Oxford awarded Professor Lionel Smith a higher doctorate, the Doctor of Civil Law (DCL).

Higher doctorates are earned awards that recognize excellence in published scholarship. Two independent judges concluded that Professor Smith’s work met the required standards, characterizing it as ”of global reach and importance” and ”of the absolute highest quality.”
