Preparing Your First Publication in the Humanities and Social Sciences

Looking to land your first academic publication? This workshop deals with pitching and writing academic book reviews.

The tips and strategies you will develop here are also transferable to pitching articles to popular publications, and to evaluating other scholarships as part of your research.

Ìý

We will cover the following topics:

  • Key elements of a book review
  • Pitching a journal in your field
  • Timeline for completing the review

Before the workshop, please identify at least one journal in your field that publishes book reviews and any submission guidelines they may have posted.

Ìý

Optional: Identify one to four ideas for texts that you might want to review. The books should have been published by an academic press within the past five years, but you need not have read them!

Ìý

This workshop is led by Dr. Amanda Perry, who holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from New York University. She has taught literature at NYU and Concordia, and she has multiple academic publications in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes.
