Sherif Emil, MDCM who is one of the recipients of the for his project entitled “Interactive case-based pediatric surgical education for a global audience.”

Elizabeth Anne Kinsella, PhD whose Preceptor Education Program Team ( ), received funding from the Ontario Ministry of Long Term Care in partnership with the Ontario Centres for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care (Ontario CLRI), to develop and launch a province wide Preceptor Resource and Education Program for Long Term care.

Karen Moniz, IHSE Graduate Student who received the “Best Poster Award” at the Innovations in Medical Education Conference (February 2022) for her poster entitled “The teaching connection when your clinic is your classroom: Ethnography as an innovation.”

Yvonne Steinert, PhD who has been identified as one of the top 20 scholars in the last 20 years in medical education by Maggio LA, Costello JA, Ninkov A, Frank JR, Artino Jr AR. 2022. .

Aliki Thomas, PhD and colleague Dr. Sara Ahmed from SPOT who received a CIHR grant from the patient-oriented priority announcement for the BRILLIANT project entitled “Effectiveness of a customized digital platform to increase coordination of care and uptake of evidence-based practices: A stepped-wedge design.”

Gabriel Venne, PhD who is one of the recipients of the for his project entitled “3D Anatomy Factory and reconfiguration of McGill’s Anatomy Laboratory to enable small-group teaching.”

January/February 2022

Tamara Carver, who is leading the team that was awarded funds from the Public Health Agency of Canada for a new online initiative, TOTAL eLearning. This project will adapt and enhance the existing bilingual Dementia Education Program (DEP) workshop content to the current COVID-19 context by using a virtual learning platform to educate and support family/friend care partners of people living with dementia. Mylene Dandavino, whose student, Laila Pinto Coelho, presented her project entitled “Safety first! Using Interdisciplinary in Situ Simulation to Test and Implement a Procedural Sedation Protocol on a Pediatric Ward” at the INSPIRE (International Network for Simulation-base Pediatric Innovation, Research, and Education) meeting on January 15, 2022.

Michelle Elizov, who is a recipient of the 2022 which promotes, recognizes and rewards faculty committed to medical education in Canadian medical schools.

Catherine Giroux, along Aliki Thomas, who is a recipient of the Institute of Health Sciences Education Innovation and Research Seed Fund for her project entitled “Social Media as a Dissemination and Knowledge Translation Strategy among Health Professions Educators.”

Susanne Lajoie, who is the recipient of the , sponsored by the Ministry of Education through the Superior Council of Education, and the Quebec Research Fund – Society and Culture. Dr. Lajoie was also a finalist for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada

Peter Nugus and colleagues, Fernanda Claudio, Tracie Barnett, Ciro Piccirillo, Jörg Fritz, Tibor Schuster, Peter Steinmetz, Aron Friedlander and Shrage Muller, for their $1.2 million grant from PHAC / CITF for their inter-disciplinary .

Dan Poenaru, Jason Harley, along with their PhD student, Fabio Botelho who were awarded the 2021 RI-MUHC Trottier Innovation Competition for their project entitled: “Trauma Innovative Training in VR-PeTIT Increases Trainees’ Performance.”

Sean McWatt, whose student, Cat Wang, won the Building Community Scholarship Travel Award to attend the American Association for Anatomy's Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology 2022 in Philadelphia, PA. The award is presented to six researchers attending the conference from outside of the USA. Cat will be presenting her abstract titled, “Student Approach to Learning and Visuospatial Ability as Independent Predictors of Academic Performance in Human Anatomy.”

Robert Sternszus who is the 2022 recipient of the . This award recognizes individuals within their first seven years as a faculty member who have produced change within their university or within the medical community as a whole through their vision, work, and interaction with colleagues.

Ning-Zi Sun, along with Penny Toliopoulos, who was awarded a 2021 Department of Medicine Grant for Education Scholarship for their project entitled: "Service, education, and professional identity formation in residency training: a qualitative study.”

Yvonne Steinert, who together with Diana Dolmans from Maastricht University, edited a special issue of Medical Teacher (volume 43, issue 8) on Faculty Development Research and Practice. The issue is now available at: .

Mary Ellen Macdonald whose recent article in the Journal of Dental Education entitled “It’s time to make dental education ‘grief literate,” was picked up by the British Dental Journal for broader exposure.

Sofia Valanci Aroesty who successfully defended her PhD thesis entitledDevelopment of a conceptual framework for peer surgical coaching.”

Joanne Alfieri who, earlier this year, successfully passed her Master’s in Medical Education dissertation entitled “What motivates the post-graduate medical trainee in seeking feedback” from the University of Dundee.

Aliki Thomas and team, including IHSE members Peter Nugus and Elizabeth Anne Kinsella for their SSHRC grant entitled “Creating synergies between education, practice and policy environments to catalyse capacity building of the scholar role in rehabilitation.”

Yvonne Steinert who has been reappointed for a five-year term as the Richard and Sylvia Cruess Chair in Medical Education.

Linda Snell and Ning-Zi Sun, who supervise, Andreanne Leblanc, who was one of the three winners of the McGill Resident Research Award for her project entitled: “Development of ownership of patient care during clerkship.”

Dan Poenaru who is the recipient of the 2021-2022 Class of ’77 MedEd Innovation Grant for his proposal entitled: “Improving the teaching of informed consent in pediatric surgery.”

Gerald Fried who is the 2021 recipient of for Outstanding Contribution to Medical Education from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Beth-Ann Cummings who has been nominated by the AFMC Senior Education Deans to represent them on the Medical Education Committee that will plan the new conference replacing CCME.

Joanne Alfieri, Ning-Zi Sun and Meredith Young who were named to the 㽶Ƶ Faculty Honour List for Educational Excellence. The Honour List recognizes outstanding contributions to education in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Jason Harley and colleagues, including IHSE colleagues Susanne Lajoie, Gerald Fried, Jeffery Wiseman for their recently accepted Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Partnership Development Grant entitled “Advancing Educational Theory, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education Collaborative Regulatory Training.”

Elizabeth Anne Kinsella who

  • gave an invited keynote address on April 23, 2021 on “Reflective Practice and the Humanities” at the Providence College Humanities Forum. The talk was open to all members of Providence College, and the broader Providence Rhode Island community.
  • gave an invited address on May 26, 2021 on “Mindfulness in the Caring Professions” at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), Sudbury Ontario. The address was open to all members of the NOSM community, including practicing health care practitioners and preceptors.
  • led the Association of Occupational Therapy University Programs Sponsored Session entitled “Advancing a National Agenda for Occupational Therapy Educational Research in Times of Transformation” at the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists Conference along with colleagues, including Aliki Thomas.

Mélanie Lavoie-Tremblay who became a of the Canadian Academy of Nursing. The Academy was established in November 2019 and is the first pan-Canadian organization dedicated to identifying, educating, supporting, and celebrating nursing leaders across all the regulated categories and domains of practice.

Mary Ellen Macdonald whose article: Freeman R, Doughty J, Macdonald ME, Muirhead V. 2019. . Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology. 48(1):1-6 generated immediate impact and visibility and was among the top cited papers in Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology journal.

Norma Ponzoni, Peter Nugus, and Tamara Carver who have officially become Academics Without Borders volunteers on a project to support faculty at the Amref International University (AMIU) in the creation of online content. The AMIU project entitled ‘Building Capacity in Health Professions Education and eLearning to Train the African Healthcare Practitioners of Tomorrow” is led by Dr. Micah Matiang’i, the Director of Open, Distance and eLearning at AMIU, a Pan-African University of Health Sciences whose headquarters are in Kenya.

Peter Nugus who was invited to present the Hirsh Rosenfeld Annual Distinguished Public Lecture in Family Medicine on the topic of “Emergency Rooms: Chaotic or Heroic?” on May 25, 2021.

April 2021

Elizabeth Anne Kinsella and colleagues from Ontario, who were awarded a Preceptor Education Grant, from the Council of Ontario Universities, Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. The grant entitled 'Preceptor education program (3rd ed): Preparing students and preceptors for on-site practice experiences' is to update the online, open access program and launch a 3rd edition.

Meredith Young, who received a grant of $ 2000 for her project entitled ‘How assessment systems are built and monitored for quality: An exploration of admissions systems’ as part of the 2020-2021 call for proposals launched by the (GRQV).
