In collaboration with the McGill Engineering department, a portable strain-gauge system was designed to investigate material deformation and tensile stress related to ice hockey. Using a portable data logger, the entire system can be attached to the participant's belt, allowing for freedom of motion since no wires limit the distance between the computer and the subject. The system is used to measure stick deformation as 8 strain-gauges are mounted at various points on a composite hockey stick. The system has also been applied to the skate blade holder (Tuuk) to obtain vertical and medio-lateral forces that are being applied on the skating surface.
