Can students from other universities register for Graphos 1-credit courses?

Although many non-McGill students can register for courses through CREPUQ, this is not possible with Graphos 1-credit courses. For further information, please see the rules and regulations in the between Québec universities' document on the BCI (formerly .

Non-McGill graduate students interested in taking a Graphos course should contact graphos [at] mcgill.ca.

Can postdoctoral fellows enrol in Graphos 1-credit courses?

Yes.  Postdocs are able to enroll on a case-by-case basis as "Special Students" in the School of Continuing Studies and will be responsible for all fees associated with the course. You should contact us at: graphos [at] mcgill.ca to determine your eligibility.

Can I take more than one Graphos 1-credit course in a semester?

Yes.

Are there waiting lists for Graphos 1-credit courses?

Unfortunately, due to technical limitations of the course registration system, there are no waiting lists for Graphos 1-credit courses.  However, if you were unable to register because the course is full, we recommend you attend the first two classes in case a space opens up during the add/drop period.  You should contact us at: graphos [at] mcgill.ca for more information.

Are the Graphos 1-credit courses designed for students from all language backgrounds?

WCOM 635, 645, 655 courses are designed for non-native speakers of English.  WCOM 614, 642, 652, 661, 662, 676 courses are open to all students.  In all courses, the one-on-one work, namely, audio recorded feedback on written and oral assignments, guarantees feedback that meets individual needs.

If I have taken WCOM 695, 650 or 690 (CESL 640, 650, or 690) in the past, can I still register for these Graphos 1-credit courses?

The 1-credit courses cover material that was previously included in CESL 640, 650, and 690.  For that reason,

  • if you have completed WCOM 695 (CESL 640), you would see little benefit from enrolling in WCOM 645 or WCOM 642 (CESL 641 or CEAP 642)
  • if you have completed CESL 650, you would see little benefit from enrolling in WCOM 655 and WCOM 652 (CESL 651 and CEAP 652)
  • if you have completed WCOM 690 (CESL 690), you would see little benefit from enrolling in WCOM 642 or WCOM 661 (CEAP 642 or CEAP 661)

Is it possible to audit Graphos 1-credit courses?

No. McGill does not permit auditing of courses.  See Program, Courses and University Regulations.

Is it possible to take Graphos 1-credit courses pass/fail?

Yes. In fact, all Graphos courses are offered pass/fail.

Is it possible to get a numerical or letter grade from a Graphos 1-credit course to appear on my transcript?

No. All Graphos courses are offered pass/fail.

Do Graphos 1-credit courses count toward my degree program?

Graphos courses cannot be counted toward the requirements of a graduate program (the sole exception being the non-thesis Master's program in Second Language Education, toward which only WCOM 645, WCOM 642, WCOM 661, and WCOM 662 (CESL 641, CEAP 642, CEAP 661, and CEAP 665) may be counted.

Do Graphos 1-credit courses count toward my GPA?

No.

Do Graphos 1-credit courses appear on my transcript?

Yes.

How can I withdraw from a course after the 'withdraw with financial penalty' deadline has passed?

To withdraw from a course after the 'withdraw with financial penalty' deadline, you must submit a Course Change Request form available at Student Records Forms to your academic unit.  If your unit supports your request, then they will forward it to the Management of Academic Records Office, Enrolment Services, along with the recommendation from your Graduate Program Director (GPD).  Refer to Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for the registration and withdrawal policies for graduate students.  NOTE:  If your academic unit does not support your request for withdrawal after the deadline, you will still be responsible for the fees associated with the course, and the course will appear on your transcript with whatever mark you earn in the course.
