Religious Studies (PhD)

Program Description

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Religious Studies offered by the School of Religious Studies in the Faculty of Arts is a research-intensive program that emphasizes interdisciplinary and tailored learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in novel thinking, critical reading, and academic writing to pursue professional opportunities in academia or industry.

The program may also be taken as a Gender and Women's Studies option where students focus on gender-related issues and feminist research and methodologies.

Unique Program Features

  • Typically, students receive external and internal funding;
  • Additionally funding may be available for travel for the purposes of research (including archival research or field work) and the dissemination of research (including conference presentations and talks);
  • The School's Faculty members are committed to the training of teaching scholars, making it one of few schools that prioritizes offering graduate students opportunities (under faculty supervision) to teach/lecture during their time in the program;
  • The School is affiliated with the Montreal Diocesan Theological College of the Anglican Church of Canada, the Presbyterian College Montreal, and the United Theological College of the United Church of Canada.

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
