INTRODUCTION

At McGill's Faculty of Medicine, we are committed to fostering the growth and development of our family medicine educators and leaders. Our Faculty Development Programs offer two distinct yet complementary courses to enhance the skills and competencies essential for effective teaching and leadership in the medical field.

1. FAMILY MEDICINE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:

This Program is adapted from the Leadership Development Course given by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at 㽶Ƶ and has been adapted to meet the needs of the Family Medicine Department. This iteration has been adapted to suit an online and blended learning environment. It is geared towards those for whom leadership forms part of their current or future career trajectory.

Participants will have an opportunity to work on their own leadership challenges and should be able to implement their new skills in the workplace upon completion of the Program.

By the end of this Program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify goals as leaders in the health professions and discuss ways of achieving these goal
  • Analyze leadership styles and consider how style influences practice, using different models of leadership and change
  • Apply a framework for analyzing change to specific situations in a professional context
  • Describe an approach to establishing and leading effective teams
  • Identify different conflict management styles and negotiation strategies
  • Discuss key issues related to strategic planning
  • Articulate ways in which to promote mentorship in their settings

This program is offered every 2 years. The next iteration of the course will run in 2026. Stay tuned.

2. FUNDAMENTAL TOPICS IN FACULTY DEVELOPMENT FOR CLINICAL TEACHERS

“The Fundamental Topics in Faculty Development for Clinical Teachers in Family Medicine” is an introduction to basic skills and competencies needed to be a competent medical educator. The Department’s Faculty Development Committee along with the Family Medicine Innovations in Learning team were responsible for the development of this course. The curriculum has been carefully planned and is based on both national and international standards.

This 8-module curriculum follows a blended learning format. Learners will participate in an interactive online module, followed by a small group session to discuss what they've learned.

Each module consists of 1.5 hours of online learning and a 1.5-hour small group meeting.

The course is open to all clinician teachers in 㽶Ƶ’s Department of Family Medicine. It is mandatory for all full-time clinician teachers who have joined a GMF-U within the last five years

Through this blended education program in “Fundamentals Topics in Faculty Development for Clinical Teachers in Family Medicine”, learners will be able to:

  • Develop fundamental teaching skills in the following areas: the teacher learner relationship, healthy learning environments, acts of teaching, delivery of effective feedback, assessment, and identification and orientation of learners in difficulty.
  • Understand your roles within the teaching unit, department, and faculty.
  • Integrate the values, missions, and visions of the department of family medicine and the faculty of medicine into your daily clinical and teaching activities.
  • Discover an enhanced sense of confidence and pride in your work as a teacher.
  • Promote and reinforce the vitality of our faculty members.

This course is offered every 2 – 5 years. The next iteration is planned for 2025/2026
