Display | Beyond the Ballroom: Celebrating Queer History Month

In honor of Queer History Month, the McGill Libraries have created a book display to celebrate the vibrant and transformative worlds of ballroom and drag culture, which have long served as cornerstones for LGBTQ+ expression, resistance, and community-building.

Are you looking for a space to accomplish your study goals in a friendly environment, while also meeting peer members of McGill’s queer community? We invite you to join these closed peer study groups, open only to students who self-identify as part of the queer community. Drop by any of these sessions during October's Queer History Month and participate in whatever way works for you – no registration required! Snacks will also be provided!

Want to make your classroom a more equitable and inclusive learning environment, but unsure where to start? Take part to pick one strategy to implement in your course, consider possible implementation challenges, and identify resources to address them. You can also share with and learn from other participants while considering varied strategies, ideas for accountability, and ways to stay connected!

A conversation on Queerness and AI

Join the Web Services' team and our panel of experts for some coffee, breakfast, and dynamic conversation and Q&A on how Queerness interacts with Generative AI.

Our conversation will be based on the 2024 Scottish AI Summit panel discussion,Ìý. The presentation asks questions about the benefits of ‘digital inclusion’ for 2S/LGBTQIA+ people, challenge simplistic assumptions about fixing existing biases in AI technology and, explore approaches to AI that are more equitable for 2S/LGBTQIA+ communities. We encourage all interested participants to watch the video before this event.

Dr. mattie brice will present How Do We Already Change the World through Play?. mattie is an artist and designer working with contemporary social issues through play. She has been a culture worker within the games industry for over a decade as a critic, designer, activist, organizer, curator, and educator.ÌýThis event is also part of the 7th Season of Disrupting Disruptions: the Feminist and Accessible Publishing and Communications Technologies Speaker and Workshop Series.

Please join the Student Wellness Hub for Queer Button-making as part of McGill's Queer History Month! Design and make buttons to show your pride. Connect with other 2SLGBTQIA+ community members. Meet members of the Hub's Pride Team. Get to know the Student Wellness Hub's wide offering of programming and services. All materials for button making will be provided. There will also be vegan snacks on offer. This event is open only to students who self-identify as members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ to help create a safe(r) space for students to meet the Wellness Hub team, learn about our services and supports, and make some buttons to show their pride!

Kiki as Resistance: Shaping Black Queer and Trans Identities with Vincent Mousseau

HSSL - Innovation Commons, Humanitites and Social Sciences Library, Downtown Campus

This talk with Vincent Mousseau (they/he) will explore the impact of ballroom culture on Black LGBTQ+ identity, weaving together storytelling and Africentric research principles. Through narratives drawn from community experiences, Vincent aims to highlight how ballroom serves as both a space for self-discovery and resistance. Demonstrations of vogue and face, presented by Father Ali Old Navy, will ground the discussion in the movement and creativity of the kiki scene, bringing its energy into the room. By blending research with lived experience, this talk seeks to capture the essence of ballroom as a site of identity formation and empowerment.

EDI Journal Club: The Role of Sexual and Gender Diversity in Youth Homelessness

Queer History Month aims to raise awareness, advance education and increase visibility of 2S/LGBTQIA+ communities. In support of Queer History Month, the Family Medicine Graduate Programs’ Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee will be hosting a journal club, in partnership with the School of Population and Global Health’s EDI Committee. Please join us as we read, reflect and discuss an article looking at the role of sexual and gender diversity in youth homelessness with Dr. Pierre-Paul Tellier.
