The application period for the Summer 2023 McBurney Fellows will open in the Fall.
For more information, please contact the Student Affairs Administrator at studentadmin.ihsp [at] mcgill.ca.
McBurney Fellowships are first and foremost service-based projects. Funding received from the McBurney Fellowship should be used for travel and a small stipend while students undertake work with an organization in Latin America. They are not intended to support students’ dissertations. Most fellows travel in the summer, but travel can take place anytime before the next recruitment cycle. McBurney Fellows are mentored by McGill Faculty members, and students must identify a mentor in their proposals. Students who are interested in applying but do not yet have a project or mentor in mind should consult the Fellowship Details and Partners sections of the website.
Strong proposals will demonstrate a project’s sustained engagement with local populations, highlight both the intended short and long-term impact of the fellowship and/or how it fits into an existing research or service program, and clearly identify the role of the student.
Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received funding, and who intend to travel in the summer.
Eligibility:
Spanish/Portuguese language ability is required for most projects. Students must be advanced undergraduate or graduate students, and in good academic standing. In order to receive an award, students must be registered toward a degree program as a full time graduate or advanced undergraduate student at McGill at the time of their fellowship for fellowships taking place in the Winter or Fall. For fellowships taking place over the Summer, students must be registered in the preceding Winter term as well as the upcoming Fall term in the same program OR have graduated in the preceding Winter term. Students must ensure they are eligible to receive the award for the term in which they intend to travel. Travel must not have started before the award is offered.
To Apply:
Students must email the IHSP's Student Affairs Administrator (studentadmin.ihsp [at] mcgill.ca) the following information and use "McBurney Application" in the subject line:
- Proposal based on this template: mcburney_application_template.docx
- Proposals should be between 4 and 10 pages in length
- Letter of support from your partner organization in Latin America (in English, French or Spanish) - *not required for applications to work with Approved McBurney Partners.* Partners will provide student letters of support if and when applications are approved. You are encouraged to get in touch with our Approved Partners during the application process to discuss potential project ideas, as you are expected to have an understanding of the partner's mandate in your proposal. Contact the Student Affairs Administrator with comments or questions on this process: studentadmin.ihsp [at] mcgill.ca
- CV
Evaluation Process:
Each application will be reviewed by at least two members of the IHSP and will be evaluated for clarity (including intended short and long-term impact and specific tasks students will perform), consistency with the McBurney Fellowship mandate, feasibility (including language ability), relevant experience, sustainability, strength of connection between the partner organization and the applicant, and ethical considerations.
Award Processing:
Awards are processed in two separate installments, which cannot take place in the same semester. Students receive the first installment after orientation and once the IHSP has received confirmation that their flight has been purchased. The final payment is processed after the final report has been accepted by the IHSP.
*Note that this award may impact any funding packages offered by your home department. For example, at McGill, offer letters for many departments include statements like the following: "Should you receive funding from another source, internally or externally, your funding package may be reduced in the interest of distributing financial support as broadly as possible to our student community."
The Institute for Health and Social Policy is committed to equity and diversity in recruitment. We highly encourage applications from Indigenous peoples, visible minorities, women, people with disabilities, people of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and those who are the first generation of their family to attend postsecondary studies. Please indicate in your cover letter if you would like this to be considered for equity recruitment.
