Step 1: VPN

In order to access your files (outside the University), you must setup VPN (Virtual Private Network).

Go to the IT Knowledge Base article on Virtual Private Network (VPN), select your operating system and follow the setup instructions. Frequently asked questions and best practices are also available.

You will require administrative privileges on your workstation to setup VPN.

If you encounter problems setting up your VPN connection, please contact McGill Central IT Service Desk.

After you have setup and established a connection with VPN, you are ready to access your files.

Do not save your username and password if you are sharing the computer.

Step 2: Mapping a drive to files on 025EMF2

  • On your desktop, double click 'My Computer'
  • Select 'Tools'
  • Select 'Map Network Drive'
  • Select a Drive letter which is not being used. (We recommend using a free drive letter between O and V.)

Leave the 'Reconnect at login' box unchecked if you are sharing the computer.

Your McGill Short Username:

To verify your McGill Short Username, log into Minerva with your 9-digit McGill ID number and PIN and go to the Personal menu.

As an alternative, you can verify your home directory department and McGill Short Username by checking the drive mapping info for the H:\ drive after logging on to an EMF workstation.

  • Click 'Finish' after entering the path.

You will be prompted to enter a username and password.

McGill Username = UEA (firstname.lastname [at] mail.mcgill.ca)
McGill Password = McGill Short Username/email password

The drive letter you selected will now be mapped to the files you need access to.

After you have finished accessing your files, you can always disconnect the mapped drive from ‘My Computer’ by selecting ‘°Õ´Ç´Ç±ô²õ’ and then ‘Disconnect Network Drive’.

To access files on the university student drive (P:\):
