Reporting an Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogen

In the event of an exposure incident, such as a mucous membrane or parenteral exposure (i.e. the pathogen is introduced directly into the body through a break in the skin by needlestick or through a cut with a contaminated object) the post exposure procedures outlined below are to be followed:

In the event of an exposure to human bloods or other potentially infectious materials:

  1. Immediately cleanse the wound or exposed surface with soap and water, or flush exposed mucous membranes with water for at least 15 minutes.
  2. The individual notifies his/her supervisor, completes the Post Exposure Bloodborne Pathogen Risk Identification Checklist, and then proceeds to the ER of the Montreal General Hospital to obtain appropriate medical care. It is essential to be seen within two hours after the exposure or as soon as possible. If hospital care is required, take your immunization booklet or health record with you and the hospital will run any and all necessary tests.
  3. Any remaining blood involved in the incident is saved for subsequent testing, and the offending object (syringe, knife, etc) is disposed of in a safe manner.
  4. Within 24 hours, fill out the McGill Accident and Incident Report Form.
