Website launched for McGill Symposium on the University's Role in Supporting Indigenous Languages
McGill's Office of First Nations and Inuit Education (OFNIE) has launched an interactive website for the upcoming events around the McGill Symposium on the University's Role in Supporting Indigenous Languages, to be held May 10th and 11th at McGill and Kahnawà :ke. .
The symposium's goal is to examine the role of the university in Indigenous language maintenance and revitalization. An Open Forum will take place Thursday, May 10th in the Education building, and a Community Forum will take place Friday, May 11th at Kahnawà :ke.
The symposium is organized with the support of the Kanien’keháka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Centre, The Faculty of Education, The Department of Linguistics and McGill's Faculty of Arts, the McGill Indigenous Studies Program, and McGill's Institute for the Study of International Development, and OFNIE. The purpose of this Symposium is to:
- signal McGill’s commitment to Indigenous languages in this province andÂ
- examine more closely what role the University should play in supporting the health of Indigenous languages, locally and regionally.
Special invitees include Indigenous language teachers, scholars, and university program directors from across Canada.
