PROJECT TITLE

Training for Nutrition Internship Supervisors to Promote Training of Interns who are Able to Serve an Anglophone Clientele and Facilitate Services in English – Region Involved: Abitibi-Témiscamingue

AGENCY

Agence de la santé et des services sociaux de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue

INSTITUTION

Centre de santé et de services sociaux Les Eskers de l’Abitibi

PARTNERS

As part of this project, the CSSS Les Eskers de l’Abitibi is partnering with the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition and l’Université Laval. Two trainers will travel to the region.

CLIENTELE

The CSS Les Eskers de l’Abitibi’s project essentially targets five nutrition internship supervisors.

DESCRIPTION

The CSSS Les Eskers de l’Abitibi (CSSSEA) serves a population of 24,800 people including approximately 370 English-speakers. In addition, due to its specializations (traumatology, orthopedics), it also receives English-speaking clients from other territories in the region, including Crees of Northern Quebec. Its objective, as part of the A Bridge to Hiring, is to improve access to promotional, prevention and intervention programs for this clientele and, thereby, help increase its vitality. More specifically, in the context of a labour shortage in the nutrition profession, the CSSSEA’s objective is to support nutritionists in their role as internship supervisors. To meet this objective:

The institution plans to provide a one-day training session, recognized by the Ordre des diététistes du Québec, that covers basic techniques in communications, supervision and conflict management. Once they are better trained, the supervisors will be able to regularly receive a greater number of interns which, in turn, should stimulate the hiring of professionals who are able to meet the needs of English-speaking populations. This training will be provided to five supervisors by two trainers from l’Université Laval who will travel to the region. Given the difficult budgetary situation, this solution is more economical than having five people travel to Quebec City. Throughout 2012-2013, the CSSSEA will also welcome two interns in nutrition who are able to serve an English-speaking clientele.

BUDGET ALLOCATED FOR 2012-2013: $11,271

ACTIVITIES COMPLETED

As set forth in its work plan, the CSSS Les Eskers de l'Abitibi concentrated its efforts on training its nutrition internship supervisors. It had initially planned to train five supervisors; however, the lack of resources and the prospect of receiving a large number of interns over the next year led project managers to deploy all necessary efforts and to provide training for technicians and nutritionists from other CSSSs. In total, ten nutritionists and nutrition workers, as well as a department manager, took part in a training session given by two trainers from Quebec City. In addition, the CSSS Les Eskers de l’Abitibi welcomed a nutrition intern for a 40-day internship as part of the Un pont vers l'embauche program.
