At Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, Star Trek Can Be a Touchy Subject

Teaching students to live long and prosper is arguably the goal of every college, but the University of Texas at El Paso has taken the Vulcan credo to the next level. In a course called "Thinking Boldly with Star Trek," Nancy Hill uses the interstellar sci-fi series as a device to get first-year students thinking and talking about a number of social issues. Star Trek, as every Trekkie knows, is more than an exploration of space, it's also an exploration of morals and ethics…. In the early 1990s, McGill students passed a referendum renaming the school's University Centre in honor of William Shatner, who played Capt. James T. Kirk in the Star Trek series and who is a McGill alum.
