McGill BCom student wins female athlete-of-year award
Desautels BCom student Jennifer Heil has been named the CanWest female athlete for 2007. In a year-end poll of writers, columnists and editors at the National Post and other CanWest newspapers across Canada, the 24-year-old freestyle skier from Spruce Grove, Alta., was chosen for her unparalleled success as "the dominant Canadian woman in winter sports."
In 2007, Heil secured her fourth consecutive World Cup moguls skiing title and her first World Cup overall freestyle skiing title. She won six gold and two silver medals in nine World Cup races and had gold and silver medal performances at the 2007 World Championships.
Heil, who is a 2006 Olympic freestyle mogul gold medalist, says 2007 was "definitely the season of my dreams." She is the first freestyle skier, male or female, to be honoured as the country's top athlete in any major vote. Britt Janyk (skiing) and Hayley Wickenheiser (hockey) were the second and third place finishers in the CanWest poll.
